George School Girls win FSL Title
Saturday, November 1, 2008
George School Girls Varsity Soccer won the Friends Schools League Championship with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Germantown Friends School. George School controlled the pace of the play throughout the game, holding GFS scoreless until the final two minutes. This marks the fifth time George School has won the championship in the last eight years.
"The passing and team play were incredible to watch," said Girls Athletics Director Nancy Bernardini. "Led by captains, Emily and Liz Stevens '09, and coached by Tom Griffith and Betty Rogers'02, this team can be very proud of their accomplishments this season, with its record of 13 wins and 5 losses. What a fantastic season! Way to make us proud!"
“Our midfield was particularly outstanding,” explained Head Coach Tom Griffith, called Griff by the team. “They really controlled the contest. Midfielders Liz Stevens '09, Lily Collins '12, Kate Harkins '11, and Stephanie Heys '12 were all excellent.”
Priscilla Wiggins '12 scored both goals, one of each half. Aly Passanante ’10 assisted on both. The second goal was a magnificent header by Priscilla on a driven cross from the right wing by Aly. “It was a really special, spectacular goal,” enthused Griff. “Kellie Edelblut '11, Xavia Bethea '09, and Alyssa Carcia '12 also contributed a lot offensively.”
GFS is well-known for their fast forwards and the George School defense did a nice job of controlling them. Christina Haney '12 helped shut down the GFS player who scored against George School twice in the regular season game. Other outstanding defensive players included goalie Kaitlyn McElwee '09, sweeper Emily Stevens '09, Cora Wettlin '09, Stephanie Feinman '10, and Megan Franco '09. Read more.
